World Refugee Day 2011 Commemoration at Shopping MallDova
Celebrating its 60 years of activity, the UN Refugee Agency commemorated the World Refugee Day in Moldova with a rich and varied program of events by launching a new awareness raising campaign.
There will be more special activities and events after June 20. On June 27, 2011, the global awareness raising campaign with the message "1 Refugee Without Hope Is Too Many" will continue at Shopping MallDova. All mall visitors will receive information booklets about the forcibly displaced and stateless, telling their impressive stories and describing their needs.
Moldova hosts refugees from Armenia, Russia, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Sudan – an overall number of 228 people. 97 of them have temporary humanitarian status, 70 are considered permanent refugees, and about 60 are waiting to be assigned a status.
UNHCR has been operating in Moldova since 1997, supporting the Government to create an efficient refugee asylum and protection system. In addition to monitoring the implementation of the 1951 Convention, the Agency also undertakes to protect stateless people, about 2000 of which are registered in Moldova.
This year UNHCR, as one of the main Agencies providing assistance and which has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize twice, encourages people all over the world to "Do 1 Thing" for refugees!
